Natural Medicine

Naturopathy, or Naturopathic Medicine, is a distinct, integrated system of primary health care offered by licensed physicians.  It consists of the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of human disorders by the therapeutic use of natural methods and materials.  These might include Nutrition, Herbs, Contrast therapy, Homeopathy, or ancient medical systems TCM. Naturopathic Medicine is a natural approach to health and healing that recognizes the integrity of the whole person.

The practice of Naturopathic Medicine includes six underlying principles of healing.  These are based on the observation of health and disease.  This observation process involves the use of modern scientific methodologies and language.

The following principles make Naturopathic Medicine different from all other medical approaches:

First do no harm:  Primum Non Nocere

Dis-ease is a purposeful process of the organism. The process of healing includes the generation of symptoms which are, in fact, an expression of the VITAL force attempting to heal itself.   The physician’s actions can support  (vis mediatrix naturae) — the healing power of Nature.  Therefore, conventional methods designed to suppress symptoms without removing the underlying causes are considered harmful and to be avoided or minimized.

The healing power of nature:  Vis Mediatrix Naturae

The body has an inherent ability to establish, maintain, and restore health.  The healing process is ordered and intelligent;  Nature heals through the response of the life force.  The physician’s role is to facilitate this process, to identify and remove obstacles to health and recovery, and to establish or restore a healthy internal and external environment.

Identify and treat the cause:  Tolle Causum

Illness does not occur without cause.  Underlying causes of disease must be discovered and removed or treated before a person can recover completely from illness.  Symptoms express the body’s attempt to heal, but are not the cause of disease.  Symptoms, therefore, should not be suppressed by treatment.  Causes may occur on many levels including physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.  The physician must evaluate fundamental underlying causes on all levels, directing treatment at root causes rather than at symptomatic expression.

Heal the whole person: Tolle Totum

The naturopathic physician must treat the whole person by taking these factors into account.  The harmonious functioning of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects are essential to recovery from and prevention of disease.  This requires a comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment.

The physician as teacher: Docere

A cooperative doctor-patient relationship has inherent therapeutic value.  The physician’s major role is to educate and encourage the patient to take responsibility for their own health.  The physician is a catalyst for healthful change, empowering and motivating the patient to assume responsibility.  It is the patient, not the doctor, who ultimately creates/accomplishes healing.  Teaching with hope, knowledge, and understanding, the physician acts to enable patients to heal.

Prevention: Prevention is the best cure

The ultimate goal of any health care system should be prevention of disease.  This is accomplished through education and promotion of life-habits that create good health.  The physician learns to assess risk factors and to sharpen their deductive reasoning, and understand the patient’s circumstances.  Appropriate interventions are then sought to avoid further harm or risk to the patient.  Building health works better and more surely than fighting disease.

Naturopathic philosophy serves as the basis for naturopathic practice.  The current scope of naturopathic practice includes, but is not limited to:

Nutrition–A cornerstone of naturopathic practice is that food is the best medicine.  Many medical conditions can be treated more effectively with foods and nutritional supplements than by other means, with fewer complications and side effects.  These methods can be used as either alternatives to mainstream medicine, or as complementary and in concert with it, depending on the desires of the patient.

Botanical Medicine–Many plant substances are powerful medicines.   Their organic nature makes botanicals compatible with the body’s own chemistry; they can be gently effective with fewer toxic side effects.  Their availability and safety make them more useful and affordable for home care of chronic conditions.

Homeopathic Medicine–Homeopathic medicine is based on the principle of “like cures like.”  It works on a subtle yet powerful electromagnetic level, gently acting to strengthen the body’s healing and immune response.  Because these are both effective and very safe, naturopathic physicians share a respect for this system of medicine with practitioners of many other healing arts.  Homeopathy is a central part of our comprehensive training for these reasons.

TCM–TCM is a complementary philosophy of natural healing brought to the medical community, largely through naturopathic medicine.  Asiatic and Oriental systems offer an important understanding of the unity of the body and mind, which add to those of the West.  Unification between philosophy and practice in the East and West offers health benefits for all of our cultures.  These promise to help harmonize the imbalances present in disease conditions and restore the dynamic balance of health.

Holistic Pediatrics

My practice looks beyond the symptoms to determine the true causes of your child’s illness. Nothing is more important or valuable than the health of your child. If you’re one of the thousands of parents who feel frustrated and overwhelmed by the different kinds of medical advice you’re getting from doctors, or being bullied into care you do not feel is right for your child, this may be the practice for you.  At the Family Wellness Centre, Dr. Becker uses disciplines of homeopathic remedies, herbs, supplements as well as diet and lifestyle suggestions that are practical and effective. Dr. Becker incorporates the best of both mainstream and alternative medicine to aid parents in dealing with common and complex childhood concerns.

~~Vaccination is a very sensitive topic. Here in this practice we are not endorsing non vaccination we are supporting choice. Because of the mandates of the AAP and the mandates put forth by the state we were forced to make a decision about choosing ALL vaccines or NONE. So we have decided to offer supportive care to clients in the absence of vaccinations.  This is not a decision that has come easily and is not right for everyone but here are some of the reasons why we believe parents deserve choices in healthcare decisions. Let me first point out this post is NOT Reasons Why You Should Not Vaccinate Your Child. This is the direction we are going based on solid research.
Real pro and con discussions are rarely fairly portrayed in the media and usually twisted with fear based information that plays on the heartstrings of parents trying to protect their child.
Here are some things to think about that could be complications to vaccinations too early in life.
• The “long-term consequences of preventing natural exposure to agents covered by vaccine are not known.”
• Vaccine side effects are largely underreported because the passive nature of the legal system puts the onus on the victim to make the connection, file extensive paperwork, and report the issue.  The medical model of care rarely correlates vaccines and reactions.
• Here is just a small list of potential side effects, Increased risk of respiratory infections after receiving the flu vaccine, seizures, food allergies, asthma, eczema, sensory integration issues, and auto immune disorders
• Parents can always choose to vaccinate…but never choose to UN-vaccinate
• No vaccine is 100% effective. Natural immunity is clearly much more effective in the body
• Fully vaccinated children (and adults) can still get the infection the vaccines are designed to prevent.  In fact, in recent outbreaks of whooping cough, the majority of those affected were fully vaccinated.  Researchers have also speculated that some forms of whooping cough are becoming resistant to vaccines.
• Vaccines are the only type of “medicine” not put thru the rigors of clinical trials before being released to the public.
• Every doctor that purchases vaccines pays into a “vaccine injury fund”.  Compensation in 2010 was nearly $2 billion to injured parties who said their health issues were caused by vaccines.
• The mechanism of herd immunity is a myth.
• Being unvaccinated does not make the individual the “person Zero” because if vaccines work like the manufacturer recommends the unvaccinated would be the only one at risk.
• Most vaccines are proving to provide less durable immunity than previously thought, meaning disease can still thrive and spread in fully vaccinated populations.
• Many ingredients in vaccines are toxic, harmful and would never be allowed in levels found in vaccines in our water supply, food or medications.  (These include: Aluminum, egg protein, antibiotics, formaldehyde, MSG and thimerosal, to name a few.
Our take home message is make an informed choice about the health of your child and find practitioners that will allow you to parent your individual child in the way you see to be the most beneficial.

Magic Socks

A drug free method of stopping a cold or flu is called  “MAGIC socks.” This treatment, has been commonly prescribed by physicians for hundreds of years.  Magic socks, involves putting on ice-cold socks and … sleeping in them! I know, I know!! Try it.
This treatment increases the systemic circulation and decreases congestion in the head, neck and throat and chest. It also has a sedating action, and many patients report that they sleep much better during the treatment. It can be used as a treatment for babies who do not sleep well at night, those that cannot sleep due to stress or minor anxiety without any stuffy head symptoms. This treatment is also effective for pain relief and increases the healing response during acute infections. All in all nature’s panacea, and the best part is…  the healing power of nature is free.
This treatment works by enhancing the body’s immune system.  The body reacts to the cold socks by increasing circulation, which also stimulates the immune system.  Stimulating the immune system, with the cold socks, systemically enhances the entire system, and enhances the battle against the nasty virus or condition, minimizing the suffering and length of the condition.
Magic socks can be used in conjunction with other treatments to treat inflammation, sore throat, headaches, migraines, nasal congestion, upper respiratory infections, coughs, chest colds and sinus infections. Magic socks do not interact with medications or other treatment modalities.
It’s best to start the wet sock treatment on first day of an illness, ideally repeating it for three nights in a row, if symptoms are still present. People with chronic conditions or a compromised immune system should consult with a doctor before starting the wet sock treatment. After one night of magic socks, in the morning your socks will be dry and your symptoms gone.
Magic Socks are only one component of an integrated treatment plan.
Magic Socks Recipe

1 pair of cotton socks-preferably white                                                         1 pair of thick wool socks                                                                       Cold water
1. Soak the cotton socks in cold water. Wring the socks out thoroughly so they do not drip.

2. Make sure feet are warm before application of cold socks.  This is very important for the effectiveness of the treatment. It could be harmful if your feet are not warmed first.

3. Place cold wet socks on feet. Then cover with thick wool socks.

4. Go directly to bed. Avoid getting chilled.

5. Wear the socks overnight. During the night, you may wake up sweaty. If so, change into dry pajamas, but leave on the socks.

6. Cotton socks will be dry in the morning.

The Sunshine Vitamin Free and Easy

Dr. Kendra Becker

Summer is here with all its benefits and exquisite pleasures. Coats, cozy fires, and long cold nights are distant memories. It’s time to enjoy all that summer has to offer including long walks in your neighborhood or local park, as well as locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables. Take advantage of the free, easily available, and most important sunshine vitamin, Vitamin D. So open the windows and let the sun shine in!.

Even though Connecticut summers are full of sunshine, scientists still continue to report an overwhelming Vitamin D deficiency among the nation’s population. Vitamin D is beneficial for many vital body processes and a deficiency of Vitamin D can certainly leave the body out of balance.

Vitamin D is a fat soluble pro-hormone that is most well known for regulation of calcium absorption…. But wait there’s more! It is also very important to metabolism at the cellular level, and it is an important aspect of insulin production, immunity, and inflammation reduction. Low levels of Vitamin D have been shown in patients with cancer, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, chronic pain conditions, and auto-immune diseases.

Most Americans get 90% or more of their Vitamin D from the sun.  The rest comes from diet. Sadly, recent increases in skin cancer rates worldwide and increasing nutrient poor foods that are consumed regularly, have allowed for long forgotten diseases like rickets to make a comeback.  Dietary sources of Vitamin D clearly play an important role in over all health.

There is a wide range of individuals managing chronic illnesses that are associated with low Vitamin D levels. The range includes those who are obese, or individuals with diseases of the colon or malabsorption problems (eg. Celiac or IBS); as well as individuals with MS, SLE, Crohn’s disease, RA, Psoriasis, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, Seasonal Depression, cancers, and most commonly, bone diseases such as osteoporosis. Age related Vitamin D deficiency is often found in the elderly.

For most people 15-30 minutes of sun a day, in most areas of the country gives the body adequate Vitamin D. Even on cloudy and cold winter days, the sun provides the Vitamin D the body needs. Always use safe practices and limit sun exposure to just enough to benefit health. It is important to note, that sunscreens decrease Vitamin D synthesis by nearly 99%.  As we age we lose the ability to utilize Vitamin D.  Darker complexions require 5 to 10 times as much sun exposure than lighter complexions in order to produce the same amounts of Vitamin D.

Choosing to get Vitamin D from food in combination with minimal sun exposure is also an option. Vitamin D can be found in large amounts in foods that have been enriched with Vitamin D. Research shows that Vitamin D3 is the best form absorbed in the human body; so when looking for enriched foods, look for the Vitamin D3 on the label.  Natural sources such as fatty deep sea fishes and orange juice are rich in Vitamin D. Another option is a tanning session at your local tanning salon.

When making decisions about Vitamin D sources keep in mind the following word of caution. Excessive levels of Vitamin D can cause serious consequences, such as kidney damage.  Although there are no reports of excess Vitamin D from the sun, over exposure to the sun causes skin damage which can lead to other serious health problems including skin cancer.  Be sure to see you healthcare provider and have your Vitamin D levels checked with a simple blood test before increasing your exposure and intake of Vitamin D.

Once we understand the importance of Vitamin D, each of us can more fully appreciate the health value of this vitamin. Adding more Vitamin D to the day’s activities will help us feel better and healthier which will feel as good as sunshine on a sunny day

A word about methylation

Methylation-Cycle2Methylation is  critical to countless functions in your body such as: thinking, repairing DNA, turning on and off genes, fighting infections and getting rid of environmental toxins to name a few.

Methylation Defects are tied to Many Conditions

  • Insomnia
  • Autism
  • Frequent miscarriages
  • Bipolar or manic depression
  • Allergies or Multiple Chemical Sensitivities
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Autoimmune Disorders
  • Hashimoto’s or Hypothyroidism
  • ADD or ADHD
  • Lyme Disease (tick borne illness compounded by MTHFR)
  • Chronic Viral Infections
  • To name a few..

Your ability to methylate helps you process toxins and hormones. For example, estrogen… you make it in your body, and you also get it from chemicals in your environment and food etc…if you can’t break down estrogen and get it OUT of your body, you could develop all sorts of disorders.

Methylation also plays a role in making and breaking down various neurotransmitters, epinephrine and melatonin.  If there’s a problem breaking neurotransmitters down, the excess may cause insomnia, panic attacks, and anger.

Such as sufferers of Mold/ Pollen/ Hay Fever, Digestive problems, brain fog, cardiac disease, Children with autism, anyone with a seizure disorder, neurological condition, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, severe Lyme disease, chronic infections, immune deficiencies, diabetes, food allergies, fertility issues, miscarriages, chronic fatigue, anxiety or any psychiatric illness. Or if you are extremely sensitive to medication, you may have a methylation problem, too.

Problems in the methylation pathway are not always genetic traits.  In any case, it may cause a deficiency of methyl-folate leading to a deficiency of glutathione. Glutathione is known as the ‘master antioxidant’ of the body. Low levels of glutathione can look like chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia, autoimmune disease states, multiple chemical sensitivities, and progressive diseases like ALS, MS, Parkinson’s, etc.

About 50 % of the US population has a MTHFR defect.

MTHFR are C677T and A1298C. You may have any combination of these mutations depending on the genetic makeup of your biological parents. Or you do not have the defect at all.  You can do a simple lab test to determine MTHFR snps, or more comprehensive genetic testing helps you find other areas of concern.

Because people with a methylation difficulty have trouble eliminating poisons, these build up in the body and contribute to many health concerns. If a body can’t methylate properly, you cannot use and absorb vital nutrients needed to keep cells healthy and protected.

Things that Interfere with Your Methylation Pathway include

  • Poor diet, poor probiotic status, digestive issues, medications, medical conditions such as autoimmune diseases, and other things that may cause nutrient deficiencies.
  • Xenobiotics
  • Taking medications that deplete vital nutrients. (like metformin, antacids, PPIs, steroids, estrogen-containing drugs and NO)
  • Drinking alcohol stops methylation and depletes glutathione
  • Stimulants like coffee and metabolism boosters use up your methylation pathway nutrients too quickly
  • Lyme disease, and the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria feeds on magnesium and uses the magnesium to make biofilms and hide. Low Mg reduces your ability to methylate.
  • Taking poor quality nutrients that deplete methyl groups
  • Heavy metals like mercury, lead, cadmium, copper, or arsenic, etc.
  • High levels of acetylaldehyde, a  neurotoxin released by Candida
  • Anxiety or a lot of stress.

Medications that Make MTHFR Much Worse

  • Acid blockers and Antacids deplete your probiotics, and suppress your ability to make B12 and absorb minerals as well as reduce immunity.
  • Cholesterol-binding drugs rob the body of essential vitamin A, D, E and K, and reduce absorption of nutrients from food.
  • Nitrous oxide it inactivates an enzymes
  • Niacin in High doses will deplete SAMe and reduce B6. BUT can be used good if you are over-methylating!
  • Birth control and menopause hormones rob the body of necessary folate
  • Sulfa-containing antibiotics inhibit the enzyme DHFR which makes methylation problems.
  • Metformin robs the body of methyl B12
  • Do not stop ANY medications without discussing with your prescriber

Start in the Gut with High-quality probiotics, which are incredibly important to people with a methylation problem to optimize gut flora and minimize candida.

  • If you’ve taken an antibiotic for more than a week, you are low in probiotics.
  • If you have had your appendix removed, you are deficient in probiotics (and thus at higher risk for Candida).
  • If you drink a lot of coffee
  • If you have recurrent vaginal yeast infections
  • If you have a lot of flatulence
  • If you crave sweets or have a white coating on your tongue

A (bad) word about FOLIC ACID

Folic acid, is not what your body uses.  Natural folate comes from the foods that you eat. The body uses methyl-folate, or L5-MTHF, not folic acid.

Anyone with a methylation defect should avoid Folic acid at all cost in the diet, supplements, products etc.

In fact ALL B vitamins should be methylated from this point. Using a CYANOB 12 can actually result in the production of cyanide!!

What else can you do?

  1. Contact your local MTHFR EDUCATED doctor
  2. Repair cell membranes
  3. Consider methylation support needed to maximize your health
  4.  Avoid foods containing enriched folic acid, preservatives, poisons, pesticides and artificial anything
  5. Minimize or avoid any form of alcohol
  6. Take high quality supplements provided by your doctor to minimizes oxidative stress
  7. Do a lab test or 23andme

Genes are just switches, they can be turned on and off with your lifestyle.

We are not victims to our genes!

Gluten-free its easy!!.Why must we eliminate gluten?

  • The gut does more than absorb food
  • It is the first line of defense in the immune system.
  • Mis-education can cause autoimmune diseases
  • Gluten filled grains should be avoided like Wheat, rye, barley and their cross contaminating cousins corn, and sorghum may all play a role in triggering these dynamic gut changes.
  • There also may be Cross-reactivity and stimulation of allergens by other foods like dairy, soy, corn, and pork.
  • Immune activation causes changes in gut permeability and blood brain permeability. This allows for the passage of toxins into areas that are not equipped to eliminate them and may play a significant role in depression.

  • Once gluten has reached the gut mucosa, it can stimulate production of antibodies.
  • TTG (Tissue trans-glutaminase) is an enzyme that plays an important role in the immune system of the gut. And a Marker for Celiac Disease.
  • TTG is active in the central nervous system, and high levels can cause a host of symptoms  including depression, seizures, headaches, multiple sclerosis/demyelination, anxiety, ADHD, and ataxia.
  • 51% of the Celiac population develops neurologic or psychiatric dysfunction, as well as neuropathy which has been found to be resolved by reducing gluten exposure.
  • There is a high incidence of positive antibodies in schizophrenics.
  • An important note is Neurological Symptoms usually present in the absence of any reportable gastrointestinal symptoms.

  • Autoimmune thyroid disease occurs in high rates among Celiac and gluten sensitive individuals.
  • Researchers have identified shared pathology to these two conditions.
  • The inflammatory cytokines cause immune reactivity in Celiac disease and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

* Gluten can travel through the blood stream can stimulate opiate receptors in the brain resulting in GLUTA-mophone.

* The effects of this stimulation may have wide-ranging psychiatric manifestations, including addiction potential of these foods.

* Those eating high gluten diets can expect to undergo 1-3 weeks of withdrawal.

* Gluten containing foods contain high levels of lectin. Lectin is used in pesticides.

* Lectin promotes intestinal inflammation and permeability, which then can cause wide-spread and varied organ damage by binding with sugars in body tissues.

GMO Concerns

  • Bt-toxin and glyphosate are two poisons heavily employed in the production of genetically modified crops.  Bt-toxin causes perforating effects on insect digestive tracts and has been found in fetal circulation
  • RoundUp, weed killer, has active bacteria-killing and inflammatory effects in our guts, over use has allowed this in the ground water supply, further polluting the crops.
  • Vegetable oils, soy, corn, and animals consuming corn products are everywhere in the standard American diet, which likely perpetuates gut dysfunction and accelerated gluten sensitivity.

  • Lab testing called “Celiac panel” are only test for alpha gliadin, tissue transglutaminase 2, and endomesial antibody.
  • IgG allergy testing tests gut reaction to wheat/gluten
  • 23andme tests metabolic markers and defects

Some degree of gluten reactivity is thought to occur in up to 80% of the population.

Response to gluten free diets and reduction of inflammation is remarkable and extraordinarily beneficial.

Celiac incidence has increased by more than 400% in the past 50 years; likely as an adaptive mechanism to decrease environmental toxicity.

Why Methylation matters

What is methylation? In scientific terms it’s addition of a Methyl group to a protein (a methyl group is single carbon and three hydrogen atoms). In over simplified terms it’s the first domino in a series of dominos of the detox pathways.  It is a facet in how the body eliminates toxins, repairs cells, manufactures cells and utilizes energy.

Methyl groups control:

  • Genetic expression and the repair of DNA
  • The stress response
  • The production and utilization of glutathione
  • The detoxification of toxins like hormones, chemicals and heavy metals
  • The inflammation response
  • Neurotransmitter manufacturing and breakdown
  • Energy production
  • The repair of damaged cells
  • The immune system and immunity

When the methylation cycle is impaired, any or all of these processes can become compromised, and a cascade of event can occur causing dis-ease and illness.

Methylation and glutathione

Glutathione is the body’s master antioxidant, in charge of all cellular repairs. The main focus of methylation is to produce glutathione. Glutathione directly neutralizes toxins, and reduces cellular inflammation, among other important processes.  Ideally, the body makes its own glutathione from other amino acids found in food and, then recycles it via methylation using methyl donors like vitamin B12, and folate. When there are a lot of toxins in the body, or a part of the methylation cycle is disrupted, illness can occur.

Improve Methylation

  • Eat Folate rich foods, natural methyl donors flood the body with all the important nutrients needed to methylate properly.
  • Take the proper B vitamins for you. EveryBody has different methylation needs and requires different nutrient levels. Discuss with your methylation savvy provider as to what is the best balance for you.
  • Be sure to get adequate minerals such as magnesium and zinc. When methylation is impaired the body uses up these minerals as cofactors faster; When digestion is impaired the body doesn’t digest these minerals adequately. Support proper methylation by making sure there are adequate amounts of these minerals in your diet.
  • To assist in optimizing digestion, take quality probiotics.
  • Reduce stress, eliminate alcohol, smoking and toxins, all of these toxins alter methylation and use up necessary methyl groups.

To support proper methylation naturally boost your glutathione

  • Sources of these important amino acids to boost glutathione include organic pastured eggs, wild caught fish and organic lean meats.
  • Eating high sulfur-containing foods is vital, try some extra garlic and onions and other cruciferous vegetables.
  • Organic Un-denatured whey protein powder boosts glutathione levels by converting cysteine into glutathione. However if dairy sensitive this is not a good choice.
  • Include antioxidant rich foods, full of Vitamin C, D and E, they all boost glutathione levels
  • Exercise helps reducing stress and depression, AND it also boosts your glutathione levels and improves detoxification.
  • Lack of sleep can deplete glutathione. Make sure to sleep well.
  • Consider Curcumin! Delicious Turmeric raises glutathione levels. Be sure to take it with a healthy fat for best digestion and absorption.

Typical lifestyle modifications to improve methylation or life in general; include avoiding toxins, minimizing stress, sleeping well, optimizing digestion and consuming a nutrient dense diverse diet. Proper supplements to support methylation and glutathione can assist the body’s ability to naturally detoxify and heal. Please not that for methylation challenges there is no “one size fits all” approach and common recommendations may cause adverse effects in a methylation challenged individual. Always seek a qualified provider to begin your journey to cellular healing.

Why do I care about this MTHFR?

mthfr img
The MTHFR gene is responsible for making a functional MTHFR enzyme. This enzyme is a key regulatory enzyme in the metabolism of folate, and the gene itself has a very important and complex role. If the MTHFR gene is mutated, the MTHFR enzyme will not function properly.

A MTHFR mutation inhibits the body’s ability to methylate, or convert pharmaceutical folic acid into Methylfolate. Methylfolate is the active and usable form of folate, and if the body is not getting enough of this folate at the cellular level, it leads to deficiencies and a multitude of health issues.

Folic Acid is actually a synthetic form of folate, produced in a lab and not found in nature. The conversion of Folic acid into the usable form of methyl folate requires a complex 4 step process, not properly preformed in individuals with a MTHFR mutation.
The most common MTHFR gene mutations are found at position C677T and/or position A1298C on the MTHFR gene located on chromosome 1, and passed from biological parents. So each individual can have UP to 2 copies of the Mutation:

Homozygous Mutation: 2 affected genes on either the 677t or the 1298c position. MTHFR enzyme will only run at about 10% efficiency (or 90% impaired).
Compound Heterozygous Mutation: 1 affected gene on the 677t gene and 1 mutation of the 1298c gene. This combination can be more severe, due to the fact that both gene defects are present. 98% of autistic children have this mutation.
Heterozygous Mutation: most common and less severe of all the mutations. It means there is 1 normal gene and 1 mutated gene. The mutation will either be on the 677 or the 1298 position. The MTHFR enzyme will run at about 40%-60% efficiency compared to normal MTHFR enzymes.

The Mutations….
677t Mutation – This mutation is most commonly associated with heart disease, heart attack, stroke, blood clots, peripheral neuropathy, anemia, miscarriages, tongue tie, congenital birth defects, to name a few.
1298c Mutation – This mutation is most commonly associated with chronic illnesses, such as; depression, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, migraines, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Memory loss, Alzheimer’s and Dementia, OCD, Bipolar, Schizophrenia, to name a few.

The Methylation Cycle is a major biochemical pathway in our bodies that contributes to a wide range of crucial body functions, such as detoxification, immune function, mood balancing, and more. When the MTHFR pathway is impaired by mutations, other pathways are also affected, and the entire body, can suffer the consequences of “oxidative stress” (toxin buildup). Other pathways do exist for these metabolic processes, however they use more energy and create more “cellular waste” than necessary..causing more “oxidative stress”.

Pathways affected by MTHFR
1) Glutathione is the key antioxidant and detoxifier in our body, so when its production is hindered, one is more susceptible to “oxidative stress” and less tolerant to toxins, like heavy metals. With age the accumulation of heavy metals and toxins grows, and may lead to a multitude of symptoms including chronic disease, rashes, premature aging, depression, and anxiety, to name a few…
2) A lack of methylfolate also hinders the multi-step process that converts homocysteine, to methionine. Homocysteine, then builds up in the bloodstream, and reduces the amount of methionine. Methionine is necessary to produce proteins and assist in breaking down histamine, serotonin, and dopamine.

MTHFR and Pregnancy
Elevated homocysteine levels caused by MTHFR mutations can lead to formation of blood clots. This is especially a cause of concern during pregnancy, and can lead to miscarriages, clotting poroblems and fertility challenges. There are various forms of MTHFR mutations, and some are more serious than others during a pregnancy, check with a provider for medical counsel on this topic. Women who experience RPL (repeated pregnancy loss) will be tested for MTHFR.
Elevated homocysteine is also frequently found in pregnant woman who experience preeclampsia, placental abruption, giving birth to low-birth-weight baby (IUGR), and neural tube defects (an abnormality of the fetal spine or brain). So it is extremely important to make sure homocysteine levels are normal during pregnancy, in the presence of MTHFR.

Conventional protocol for MTHFR mutations, especially during pregnancy is a mega dose of folic acid, usually around 5mg. As previously mentioned this simply accelerates “oxidative stress” and further complicates the problem. MTHFR mutations are not a “one size fits all”. With a MTHFR mutation, stay away from folic acid. Educate yourself, eat a Clean Diet, Sleep Well, Exercise, get fresh air and release stress. See your favorite MTHFR educated provider for the best advice on supplementing if necessary.

Probiotics are not all treated equally

It is no secret that probiotics are an integral part of healing and health maintenance for every body! The variety of strains and choices can sometimes confuse the naïve or “unprofessed vitamin snob”. Probiotics are NOT all the same!
As of recent, researchers are taking quite an interest in probiotic strains and their effects on human microbiome and ultimately health. In recent years there has been a surge in the study of specific strain probiotics, the human microbiota, and other related applications. The World Health Organization defines probiotics as “live organisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit to the host”.
Probiotics can kill pathogens by positively stimulating the immune system, balancing the gut microbes by secreting or inhibiting certain chemokines and supporting the inhibition of pathogens.
Check out this list to see which specific strains of probiotics can treat conditions.
Diarrhea caused by too many antibiotics-Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, when given at the same time as antibiotics, had a greater than 60% reduced risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea.
Anxiety- research has shown Lactobacillus helveticus R0052 and Bifidobacterium longum R0175 are effective in clearing high levels of anxiety provoking neurochemicals from the gut!

It’s not unusual for children to have very high fevers. In fact, it is generally very helpful for kids to get robust fevers, as it signals a strong immune response which can quickly eliminate pathogens in a short period of time. A fever isn’t intrinsically dangerous until it reaches over 106° F at that point brain damage can occur. Febrile seizures can occur at temperatures below this point and may be related to a genetic predisposition. Febrile seizures in otherwise normal children can be safe.
Here are some guidelines for managing a high fever:
• Pay attention to how the child is looking/feeling than what the thermometer says. Use parental instincts and your own sense of touch to decipher how hot the fever is burning.
• Typical fevers range between 100.6 and 104° F
• Fevers around 105°F-106°F usually indicate a severe bacterial infection and should be evaluated
• High fevers in pregnant women are of concern, and should be evaluated.
• The brain has a set-point at which fever stops rising. It is a myth that offering a fever reducer will stop the infection. In fact it suppresses the immune system and allows the infection to strengthen. Cytokines that target infection work best at an elevated temp!
• High fevers that last over 4 days or a fever in a newborn should be evaluated by a healthcare provider immediately.
• Febrile Seizures- THIS IS TERRIFYING, but generally harmless. These seizures DO NOT result in brain damage; they can last a few seconds to a few minutes and can occur in 4% of the population between the temperature ranges of 101°F-103°F and febrile seizures only occur in kids’ ages 6 months to 5 years old. Fever reducers DO NOT prevent febrile seizures. General protocol is to have a child evaluated by a health care provider if they have a febrile seizure.
Avoiding a fever reducer is during a fever is very plausible. Acetaminophen is hugely liver toxic; it is the number one cause of liver failure in the UK, and the number two cause in the US. The way Acetaminophen/ Paracetamol are metabolized requires huge amounts of glutathione in order to make it less toxic. Acetaminophen is infamous for depleting glutathione. Acetaminophen overdoses can occur at remarkably low doses compared to other pharmaceuticals, can cause massive liver damage.

The constituents in Acetaminophen/Paracetamol require huge amounts of Glutathione to be eliminated from the cells; leaving excess free radicals. These Free radicals cause DNA and cellular damage, made worse by methylation defects such as MTHFR.
Another problem is that acetaminophen is in many combination products, including over the counter cough syrups, pain formulas, allergy medicines and more. So any chance we get to avoid liver damage in small children gives our kids an advantage in healing.

• Fevers only need to be treated if they cause discomfort. Usually fevers don’t cause any discomfort until they go above 102° or 103° F. it is rare to have a high fever above 105°F, and are generally they are harmless.
• With pharmaceutical treatment, fevers only reduce by 1° or 2°
• Without pharmaceutical treatment fevers will normally last for 2 or 3 days until the body fights off the infection.
• The body’s temperature normally changes throughout the day. It peaks in the late afternoon and evening. An actual low-grade fever is around 101° F
• Try “Wet Socks”, homeopathy, chiropractic adjustments or tepid baths as a natural way to comfort a child with a fever.
